Why is it called the "Gorge of Rattles"?

The gorge took its name from the characteristic whistling sound produced as the wind passes through the rock crevices. This sound resembles the beating of rattles (or "kourtala" in Greek), adding to its dramatic and powerful atmosphere.

Chapel & Springs of St. Nicholas: Near the entrance, stone steps lead you down to the bottom of the gorge. There, you will find the small chapel of St. Nicholas and the main springs of the Kourtaliotis River—a place of incredible natural energy.

🌴 The Path to Preveli

The Kourtaliotis River flows through the entire gorge and eventually meets the sea at the famous Preveli Palm Beach. While the hike through the river all the way to the beach is demanding and requires special care, it remains one of the most iconic adventure routes in Crete.
