Explorer Rethymno: The Fortezza Citadel 🏰

Standing proudly on the hill of **Paleokastro**, the **Fortezza** is one of the largest and best-preserved Venetian fortresses in Crete. It was built between **1573 and 1580** by the Venetians to protect the citizens from the Ottoman threat and pirate raids, offering a unique glimpse into the island's defensive history.

The fortress was designed to house the entire population of the city in case of an attack. Within its massive stone walls, you can still find traces of various eras, from the Venetian barracks to the Ottoman additions. Its star-shaped plan and sturdy bastions make it an architectural masterpiece of the Renaissance period.

🔍 Key Landmarks Inside the Walls

• **Sultan Ibrahim Mosque:** Originally the Venetian Cathedral of St. Nicholas, it was converted into a mosque with an impressive large dome that still stands today.
• **The Rector's House:** The magnificent residence of the Venetian Governor (Rector) of Rethymno.
• **The Council Building:** Where the local nobility met to discuss administrative matters.
• **Ammunition Stores & Cisterns:** Essential structures that allowed the fortress to withstand long sieges.
• **Erofili Open-Air Theater:** A modern addition named after a famous Cretan Renaissance play, which hosts the Rethymno Renaissance Festival every summer.

🧭 Visitor Information

A walk through the Fortezza is a walk through time. Wear comfortable shoes and allow at least an hour to explore the entire site. It is located just a short walk from the Old Town center.
