The region of Rethymno is home to some of Crete's most impressive canyons, offering unique opportunities for hiking, river trekking, or simply capturing breathtaking photos. As your Rethymno Explorer, we present the top 5 must-visit gorges for your holiday itinerary. π§π²
The most famous gorge in Rethymno. Its name comes from the sound of the wind "clapping" (kourtala) against the rocks. The "Great River" flows through it, ending at the Preveli Palm Forest. Don't miss the St. Nicholas Church built into the cliff and the magnificent waterfalls.
Located near Plakias, this gorge is unique because the road passes literally through its narrow walls. Itβs perfect for a quick stop to see the vertical cliffs that reach 600 meters and the small chapel of St. Nicholas embedded in the rock.
A green oasis just 7km from Rethymno city. This easy trail follows a stream past the ruins of 30 old watermills. Itβs the perfect cool escape for a hot summer day and very popular for families staying in town.
Located in the heart of the Amari province, Patsos combines nature with religious history. The highlight is the Cave Chapel of Agios Antonios. There are organized picnic spots and local taverns at the entrance.
Close to the city, this gorge is a vital habitat for local reptiles and birds. It keeps its water late into autumn and is ideal for those looking for a more authentic, less crowded hiking experience with proper gear.
Explorer Rethymno Hiking Tip: Most gorges in Rethymno have flowing water year-round. We recommend crossing them between June and October, wearing appropriate waterproof hiking shoes. Always check the weather for heavy rain before entering!
